Yes, American veterans typically receive medical care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. The VA operates one of the largest integrated healthcare systems in the United States, providing comprehensive medical services to eligible veterans. This includes primary care, specialty care, mental health services, preventive care, and more. Veterans may receive care at VA medical centers, community-based outpatient clinics, or through telehealth services. Additionally, veterans with service-connected disabilities or conditions may receive disability compensation and access to specialized care through the VA.
Generally, you must have 90 days or 24 months of active duty (depending on when you served) to qualify
Former active duty service members (ADSM) and their families have access to Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP) coverage under certain circumstances:
- Eligibility includes situations where the sponsor is honorably discharged from active duty or receives medical care through a military health plan.
- Family members can enroll alongside the sponsor by purchasing a family plan.
- It’s important to note that ADSMs and their families are not eligible for TRICARE or Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) benefits.
- Coverage can last up to 18 months, beginning when TAMP benefits expire.
Members of the Select Reserve, Retired Reserve, and their families also have access to CHCBP:
- Eligibility begins after active duty or TAMP coverage ends, or when TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) or TRICARE Retired Reserve (TRR) coverage ends.
- Like ADSMs, family members can enroll with a purchased family plan.
- Coverage duration is also up to 18 months.
Ex-spouses who haven’t remarried can qualify for CHCBP:
- They must have been covered by TRICARE or TAMP as dependents of a service member before the final divorce decree.
- Coverage can last up to 36 months, with exceptions for those under age 55.
Spouses and dependent children of sponsors can also qualify:
- They must no longer meet the requirements as dependents of a service member.
- Coverage lasts up to 36 months, providing continued healthcare benefits after losing eligibility for TRICARE or TAMP.
